Pediatric Urology
By using an endoscope, an endoscopy examines the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body.
A variety of urinary tract diseases require endoscopic surgery. Ureteric stones, kidney stones, obstructions at the ureteropelvic junction, ureteral strictures, urethral strictures, tumors within the kidney collecting system, ureter, urinary bladder, and to relieve kidney blockage.
There are two primary techniques for endoscopic surgery. The retrograde approach entails a patient being sedated and having their legs placed in stirrups. The surgeon then inserts a cystoscope/ureteroscope, which is connected to a camera, into the bladder and advances it into one of the ureters. Fluoroscopy or real-time x-ray guidance may also be used to ensure accuracy during the procedure.
